Sharon, Registered Manager at Health Street, took a moment to tell us more about working at Heath Street:

What kind of care do you provide at Heath Street?

We look after people with a profound learning disability. We’re talking about people with a physical disability and very complex health needs. Our service users are aged between 40 to 86 and they are totally reliant on us. The people we care for, are fully reliant on us and that brings its own rewards as a careprofessional.

What’s it like working as part of the team at Heath Street?

We’re a very hands on team and incredibly supportive of each other. Our dynamic is different – we all get involved in every aspect of the running of our home – whether that’s washing and cooking or giving out medication – it makes for a tight knit team who mentor and support one another.

Is it rewarding working with people with very complex needs?

It’s a very different place to work, as no two days are the same. It’s incredibly rewarding, because we have to do everything for the people we care for. Our service users can’t say ‘thank you’, but we build such a close personal relationship, we learn to understand body language and other non-verbal signals. A relative told us recently that their son seemed 200% better than he has been in a while, and that’s really satisfying.

What experience are you looking for in new recruits?

People need to be used to full hands-on care – full support with personal care, bathing, hoisting, dressing, feeding and helping service users to take part in activities and days out.
